1,25: a human measurement
performance in public space
Caracas, 2015
‘1.25: a human measurement’ represented a transitional work between the more traditionally political activism for the rights of people with disabilities (a work that i had been conducting under the umbrella of the Caracas Accesible organization) and the performative use of my own disabled body in the context of being a motorized wheel chair user as both of these things relate to the visibility and reclamation of space, in this case, in public space.
1.25 meters is the minimum regulatory width for a sidewalk according to Venezuelan legislation on accessibility, though it is rarely applied. Marked by a tattoo on my side 1.25 meters from my feet, I become a human ruler to demonstrate the precariousness of access and transit for bodies like mine in public space. Ballet and contemporary dancers (Berna Rodríguez, Karla Medina, Daniela Mambié, Beatriz Márquez, Odri Albornoz) and the artist Misael Carpio collaborated with me in this collective action.
